Too tacky for the road?  Custom Massachusetts RMV license plates refused

As you go through your weekly tasks, you will see many creative ideas Vanity License Plates. But you won’t see vehicles with “DILF or GLOCK7” or “AYKFM” or “NARCAN” plates on them.

These are among nearly 900 custom license plates that have been rejected by the state Motor vehicle registration in 2022. Last year, Massachusetts residents ordered 10,165 luxury license plates.

The department even has a dedicated team, and Division of Special Paintings, which handles these requests. Even if you’re able to swipe something away from their watchful eyes, the Register says it reserves the right to revoke a custom license plate.

In a public records request, we requested all the different versions of license plates from last year. We at The Enterprise put it together in Searchable database to display to our subscribers.

RMV has several bases for vanity slabs

It can contain up to six characters, with a minimum of two. The first two letters must be letters and numbers can only come at the end. It cannot be used as a surrogate character, according to the RMV.

In addition, the letters “I”, “O”, “Q” and “U” can only be used in words that are spelled correctly.

Why are custom license plates rejected?

Existing vanity boards have already been rejected, and there are several other reasons for rejection.

One such reason is when a group of characters are deemed “vulgar in the sense that they are in bad taste, offensive, or otherwise considered vulgar”.

It also includes dishes that can belittle someone. Obscene messages or references to body parts, ethnic heritage, gender, disability, sexual orientation, or political affiliation are grounds for refusal.

According to the RMV, a license plate with “fighting words” or “designed to elicit emotion” will also be denied.

These restrictions also apply when such words appear when someone sees them in a mirror, according to the RMV.

“It does not matter whether offensive material is being communicated when a vanity plate is read from left to right or right to left, when viewed through a rear-view mirror, or whether it is in a foreign language or in code that only a small segment of society may be able to easily decoded,” according to the RMV rules.

These personal license plate requests are denied. Here’s why

REDRUM AND MURDER (REQUESTED BY THE SAME PERSON) – expressions of fighting words. SMUT – Obscene or bad taste.
