Golfer Angel Cabrera has been released on parole after two years of sexual violence cases

Argentine golfer Angel Cabrera was released on Friday after serving two years in custody over gender-based violence cases against two of his ex-girlfriends.

Judge Cristobal Lay Rus of Córdoba Province – 800 kilometers (500 miles) north of Buenos Aires – fired the golfer after psychological tests on the 53-year-old Cabrera.

Cabrera has come to terms with the devastating mistakes he made. He regrets it, “he will go home with his family,” the judge told a local television station.

Cabrera, the 2007 US Open champion and 2009 Masters winner, was sentenced in July 2021 to two years in prison for threatening and harassing his partner Cecilia Torres Mana between 2016 and 2018.

In November 2022, he was also on trial for making threats and harassment against Micaela Escudero, one of his ex-girlfriends. Cabrera pleaded guilty, and the court brought the two verdicts concurrent and sentenced him to three years and 10 months in prison.

Torres Mana and Escudero said Cabrera deserved parole.

During the investigation, Cabrera traveled to the United States in 2020 without informing local authorities, prompting the province of Córdoba to seek his international arrest. The golfer came to Brazil, where he was arrested in January 2021 and then extradited to Argentina.
