One man said his new job’s policy of having employees come to work early was slowly becoming a problem.
Posting on the “r/antiwork” subreddit – an online forum where people can share their work-related struggles to receive help and advice from others – revealed that as an ambulance worker, he is required to come in early to prepare for the day, but there is an outstanding issue that has prevented him from wanting to follow the new policy.
He is required to come to work 15 minutes early, but cannot check in until his shift begins.
on his RedditHe explained that there has been a push recently from management about all ambulance workers coming in 15 minutes before their shifts start so they can start getting ready for the day and getting the trucks ready.
“This way we are on duty (as fast as we can). It never works out like this though if things break down or (the night shift) leaves units on show, which leads to catching up and talking to management for not showing up early,” he wrote. .
However, despite asking all of his colleagues to come in early, their management won’t let them log the time they spend getting ready for their day, which means there’s quite a bit of time when they’re basically working for free. He also noted that he was “guilt tripped” by following the new policy, as his boss claimed He needed to be a “team player” and “help”.

In response, he told his boss that he didn’t work for free and that if it wasn’t important for him to get paid, it wasn’t important for him to do. “This usually ends the conversation,” he continued.
“It aggravates me, but not as much as my (usually older) co-workers who not only show up 15 minutes early and work voluntarily, but talk about themselves and those of us who don’t. The pressure is on younger employees to be taken advantage of because they don’t know what it is. Better is an infuriating thing.”

He noted that no one should apologize for wanting to value their time and work. “These 10 minutes add up to hundreds of dollars a year for our lowest paid earners, and even when I explain it to them, they still go along with it. It blows my mind.”
By having a boss who doesn’t respect or value their employees, it can hurt the work environment.

Another user added, “It’s funny how bosses always say they’re team players. Then when you turn them around, why don’t you buy lunch everyday to come early? Be the boss of the team, and lead by example.”
